Five Myths About Steam Cleaning Carpets Debunked

By Carpet Cleaning, Deep Cleaning

Keeping your carpets clean is essential for any business or homeowner. Clean carpets are more attractive, give the right impression about your home or business, and are more hygienic for the people who come into contact with them. Unfortunately, carpet cleaning myths continue to persist, often leading to what is, simply, some bad carpet cleaning advice.

Read on for some of the most prevalent myths about steam cleaning carpets.

Myth #1—Newer Carpets Don’t Need Steam Cleaning

Your carpet may look new, but remember that it was designed to effectively hide wear, grime, stains, and other buildup. In fact, by the time you notice staining and grime, more extensive damage has likely already occurred. Schedule regular cleanings for newer carpets to maintain a clean appearance.

Myth #2—Frequent Steam Cleaning Damages Your Carpet

Modern carpets are designed to withstand vigorous cleaning and stand up to daily vacuuming and regular steam cleaning. At a minimum, vacuum regularly and opt to have your carpets steam cleaned yearly or twice yearly. For best results, ensure you don’t let more than 18 months elapse between cleanings.

Myth #3—Steam Cleaning Causes Carpets to Attract Dirt

Some carpet cleaning methods—such as renting a cleaner from your local grocery store—can cause your carpet to collect detergent and excess water. As a result, your carpet may build up residual dirt and grow dingy and stained much more easily. However, a professional steam cleaning properly rinses out all cleaning agents and dirt, leaving your carpet clean and free of any residue that can attract grime.

Myth #4—Steam Cleaning Can Cause Mold and Mildew Growth

Utilizing a store-bought carpet cleaner that leaves your carpets soaked with water for days can promote mold or mildew growth. However, properly handled, professional steam cleaning does not create mold or mildew. When done correctly, a professional steam cleaner will extract most of the water from your carpet, allowing it to dry fully within a matter of hours.

Myth #5—Off-the-Shelf Cleaning Products Work Just Fine

Store-bought cleaners often leave behind a residue, attracting grime that looks worse than the original stain. In addition, those deodorizing powders you sprinkle on your carpet tend to build up and settle into the pile, coating the fibers, attracting grime, and potentially damaging your vacuum cleaner. Instead, utilize a professional steam cleaning service to ensure you’re keeping your carpets safe and healthy.

4 Ways to Prepare for Your Commercial Kitchen Health Inspection

By Commercial Cleaning Services

As the manager of a food service establishment, it is your responsibility to ensure that the food you provide to the public is not only delicious but is safe to eat. Health inspections by local government officials ensure your business’s compliance with health codes and give your customers confidence that you are doing your best to keep them safe.

Since health inspections are unannounced, you must always be prepared for a visit from the health department. The easiest way to do this is by making sure you are always up to code. Identifying best practices, implementing ongoing staff training, having the proper tools on hand, and doing routine self-inspections will make your next health inspection a breeze.

  1. Identify Commercial Kitchen Cleaning Best Practices

One of the best ways to determine what your restaurant guidelines should include is to develop a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) Plan. A HACCP plan identifies potential food contamination risks so that you can implement procedures to minimize the risks. The plan, developed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, can serve as a general guideline that you should modify to fit your individual restaurant. There are certain important areas that you should include, such as proper sanitation, employee health guidelines, proper food handling, storage, and temperature control.

RELATED ARTICLE: How to Deep Clean a Restaurant

  1. Staff Training

The kitchen and front of the house staff must be familiar with basic health guidelines, such as proper handwashing, sanitation, and food labeling guidelines, food temperature and storage guidelines, and when to stay home from work. Staff should be trained on how to use and properly clean all the equipment, including effective sanitation. Create kitchen and front of house cleaning lists and monitor them to make sure they are being completed.

  1. Proper Equipment

For your staff to stay in compliance with health codes, they need the proper tools. This includes thermometers to check food temperature, test strips to monitor sanitizer strength, and cleaning supplies to disinfect hard surfaces.

RELATED ARTICLE: Go Beyond Dusting – The Importance of Deep Cleaning

In some instances, you may not have the proper equipment to clean your restaurant thoroughly. You should call a professional to handle jobs such as cleaning exhaust hoods and degreasing floors in these cases. This will ensure that the restaurant is clean, reduce safety risks from dirty floors, and will eliminate food contamination from greasy hoods.

  1. Commercial Kitchen Self-Inspections

Doing regular inspections of your restaurant kitchen will help you monitor staff understanding and compliance with health codes. Shift managers should be following cleaning and maintenance checklists for equipment, exhaust hoods, and flooring to reduce grease hazards and other safety risks. Managers should check for proper sanitization, food labeling, temperature control, and employee understanding of regulations.

The easiest way to be confident that you will pass your next commercial kitchen health inspection is by always remaining in compliance. Making food safety a priority is good for public health and good for business.

Make sure your restaurant is ready for its next health inspection by contacting us today to set up a thorough cleaning of your commercial kitchen.

How to Deep Clean a Restaurant

By Deep Cleaning

Now more than ever, it is important that customers have confidence in a business’s commitment to health and safety. For the restaurant industry, this means ensuring that guests feel you are doing everything possible to maintain a clean and sanitary environment. To achieve this level of consumer confidence, your restaurant needs to go beyond the routine cleaning done by staff. Current and future customers will be expecting a level of cleanliness that can only come from consistently adding “deep clean” into your cleaning schedule.

Deep Cleaning the Restaurant

Restaurants typically make general cleaning duties a part of front of house side work. Tasks such as wiping off tables, sweeping or mopping floors, and maintaining bathroom cleanliness fall under this category.

RELATED ARTICLE: Business Deep Cleaning: Not Just Important During COVID-19

The deep clean process of a restaurant requires a three-step process.

  • Thoroughly cleaning all surfaces. This step is necessary to maximize the effectiveness of the next two.
  • Application of a disinfectant that is effective against viruses, as well as mold and fungus.
  • Reduction of existing bacteria through the use of a sanitizing product.

Deep Clean – Front of House

A deep cleaning of the front of the restaurant requires a thorough cleaning of all surface areas before using a disinfectant and sanitizer. This includes:

  • Booths, chairs and chair legs, bar, tabletops, and legs
  • Blinds, curtains, ceiling fans, walls, picture frames
  • Baseboards, floors, shelving areas
  • Soda machines and condiment dispensers
  • Thorough cleaning of all restroom surface areas

RELATED ARTICLE: The Importance of Commercial Carpet Cleaning During COVID-19 and Beyond

Deep Clean – Back of House

Deep cleaning the kitchen area of a restaurant is an arduous task. It requires the thorough cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing of all surface areas, such as:

  • Cutting boards, tabletops, steam tables, sinks, faucets
  • Grills, stoves, cook tops, fryers, ovens
  • Soda guns, coffee machines, meat, and cheese slicers
  • Walk-in refrigerators, reach-in coolers, freezers
  • Walls and ceilings
  • Floors and floor mats

Grease build-up in kitchen areas is not only a sanitary concern, but it can also become a fire hazard. Foot traffic from the kitchen through the front of the restaurant can result in grease lanes on floors in high traffic areas. This can result in a safety issue for employees and guests.

As part of the deep kitchen cleaning, it is important to clean grease build-up from walls, hoods, and ceiling areas. Grease traps and floor drains should also be cleaned and flushed.

To do a thorough and effective deep clean of your restaurant, you will need the proper tools and the best products available. By hiring a professional to do the work, you can be confident that you have done all you can to maintain a clean and safe environment for your customers and staff.

If your restaurant is ready to take its cleaning program to the next level, contact us today to see how a deep-cleaning program can benefit you and your customers.

Business Deep Cleaning: Not Just Important During COVID-19

By COVID-19, Deep Cleaning

The current COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of maintaining a safe and healthy work environment. In response to recommendations from the CDC, many commercial business owners added professional “deep cleaning” to their regular maintenance schedules to keep employees and customers safe and healthy.

There are a number of reasons business owners should prioritize a commercial “deep cleaning” program beyond the pandemic to benefit staff, customers, and the bottom-line.

The Importance of Deep Cleaning Your Commercial Business During COVID 19

The World Health Organization and the CDC emphasized the benefits of a deep cleaning regimen to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. This is especially important to commercial businesses where employees interact with customers and vendors.

RELATED ARTICLE: Reasons a Professional Cleaning Service Is the Best Way to Get Tough Stains Out of Tile and Grout

Deep cleaning your building reduces exposure to pathogens that collect on surfaces, including natural stone, upholstery, fabric, carpet, and HVAC systems.

There are three components to business deep cleaning:

  • Clean dirt and debris to maximize surface area exposure to sanitizers.
  • Apply a disinfectant to kill a range of microorganisms such as viruses, fungus, and mold.
  • Apply a sanitizer, reducing 99% of bacteria on surfaces.

Cleaning Your Commercial Business Should Be the “New Normal”

The health protocols established during this pandemic will likely become standard expectations from customers and employees.

RELATED ARTICLE: The Importance of Commercial Carpet Cleaning During COVID-19 and Beyond

As an owner, the best thing you can do for your employees is to maintain a healthy work environment. This means making “deep cleaning” a part of your standard operating procedures.

A cleaner environment means healthier, happier, and more productive employees. Studies by the EPA show that indoor air quality is one of the greatest contributors to a healthy workplace.

As businesses resume normal operations and consumers venture back out, the top priority will be keeping your staff and clientele as safe as possible. Customers have more confidence going into businesses that they feel are prioritizing their health. A clean building is a testament to your understanding of their concerns. Your brand will benefit as potential customers associate it with a dedication to the health and safety of staff and consumers.

Regular deep cleaning of your commercial business will improve the workplace feel, and the confidence of your customers long after the pandemic. By hiring a professional commercial cleaning service, you can be confident in a thorough cleaning using the proper tools and industrial strength products.

If your business is ready to prioritize the health of its staff and its customers, contact us today to see how a deep cleaning program can improve your bottom line.

Reasons a Professional Cleaning Service Is the Best Way to Get Tough Stains Out of Tile and Grout

By Commercial Floors, Tile and Grout

If your home or business is like the vast majority in the country, you likely have at least one area of tile—perhaps in a kitchen, bathroom, entryway, or even throughout your home. There’s a good reason too; tile is exceptionally durable, adds beauty to your home or business, and can be relatively simple to spot clean. However, over time, tile floors can be tricky to keep looking fresh—especially within grout lines.

Why Is Tile So Difficult to Clean Properly?

While it’s easy to wipe up the occasional spill, tile and grout are more susceptible than you might think to tough, long-lasting stains that are difficult to remove. Textured tile can accumulate surface dirt and grime, causing them to appear dull and potentially discoloring the tile’s whole surface. This layer of dirt is often challenging to remove with household mops, even with the most effective tile floor cleaning products from your big box store.

RELATED ARTICLE: The Importance of Commercial Carpet Cleaning During COVID-19 and Beyond

Also, most tiles are made of natural stone or ceramic, while grout usually consists of cement and sand. Both the tiles themselves and the grout between them are highly porous. They can absorb spills, causing lingering stains that can affect the appearance of your flooring—dirty mop water, and even the very chemicals you use to clean your tile can lead to further discoloration of both tile and grout. Worse yet, porous tile and grout can harbor bacteria, viruses, mold, and mildew if not cleaned properly.

Professional Tile and Grout Cleaning Can Help

Using a top-quality tile cleaner or a mop and bucket is effective short-term, but in the long run, you could be damaging your tile. If you’re using harsh chemicals, abrasive scrub brushes, or mop water to clean your tile floor, consider these benefits of a professional tile and grout cleaning service:

  • Professional Equipment. A professional cleaning service has the tools and professional cleaners necessary to cut through surface grime and remove stains. You can address stubborn stains and remove years of discoloration in one fell swoop.

RELATED ARTICLE: How to Choose a Tile & Grout Cleaning Professional

  • Deep Cleaning. Unlike traditional mop and bucket cleaning, professional cleaning services can use commercial-grade solvents to ensure deep stains and contaminants like bacteria, viruses, mold, and mildew don’t linger within pores or grout lines. You’ll ensure the overall beauty of your tile while addressing the health and safety of you, your family, or your employees.
  • Damage-Free. Years of grime can cause surface etching as people walk on your tile; meanwhile, the chemicals you use to clean them could be causing additional damage as well. A deep, professional clean removes surface grime safely, without damaging your tile.

If you’re in search of professional tile and grout cleaning in Toledo or the surrounding areas, consider the experts at Professional Surface Restoration. We’ll provide professional, deep cleaning of all your tiled areas using professional grade cleaners, tools, and procedures—you’ll prevent damaging buildup and restore your tile to its former beauty while keeping your home or business safe.

FAQs About Antimicrobial Floor Coating

By antimicrobial floor coating

Daily business concerns are often more than enough to keep you busy. Ensuring the safety and maintenance of the flooring can go from being a distant thought to an urgent problem that suddenly needs to be dealt with quickly, especially during these times of microbiological awareness. Preventing the spread of disease has become a singular priority in the last year and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future.

What Is Antimicrobial Floor Coating?

Microbial, sometimes called antibacterial, flooring is produced with an EPA-registered component that deters and inhibits the growth of microorganisms, which provides long-term protection from a wide-ranging spectrum of bacteria, fungi, yeast, actinomycetes, and mildew. It can also protect your flooring from odor-causing microorganisms.

RELATED ARTICLE: Go Beyond Dusting – The Importance of Deep Cleaning

For the best prevention possible, we use an antimicrobial dispersion throughout the resin used for the floor, rather than just in the sealer alone. This process maximizes antimicrobial protection, as well as giving the flooring a beautiful glossy shine.

Why Is It Important?

Bacteria and microbes exist nearly everywhere and in every environment. They can even survive in outer space. Imagine how easily germs can be carried into your facility by your staff, customers, shipping partners, and even by industrious creatures like rodents and tiny ones like insects. Your flooring is a high-traffic area and is likely to have the most exposure to microbes than any other part of your facility, therefore, it should be the most heavily protected from microorganisms. This is especially true of businesses that demand clean and safe processing environments.

RELATED ARTICLE: 3 Ways to Protect Your Medical Office with Deep Cleaning

What Are the Benefits?

Concrete is naturally porous and is a breeding ground for bacteria, fungi, molds, and spores. These microbes grow in the moisture-retaining cracks and crevices found in concrete. Compared to bare concrete, antimicrobial flooring systems:

  • Provide a more microbiologically sound environment, which prohibits the growth of microbes, rendering your facility safer from health hazards.
  • Are USDA compliant and CFIA approved.
  • Come in a variety of colors and textures (for safety)
  • Can be installed very quickly, minimizing facility downtime
  • Are easy to clean and sanitize, eliminating the need for caustic chemicals which pollute the air

What Industries Are Best Benefited from Antimicrobial Flooring?

  • Manufacturer Processing and Packing Facilities
  • Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities
  • Meat and Seafood Packing Facilities
  • Laboratories
  • Bakeries, Kitchens, and Dairies
  • Pharmaceutical Processing Facilities

The list is not exhaustive. Any business can benefit from antimicrobial floor coating since it provides a barrier for microbe growth, which is rapidly becoming an important focus of businesses around the world.

Are You Aware of These Seven Epoxy Floor Benefits?

By Deep Cleaning, Epoxy Floors

If done well, flooring shouldn’t be a daily concern for your business. However, when maintaining the cleanliness of your business’s floor becomes a nightmare, and its surface provides safety hazards for you and your employees, flooring can quickly turn from an afterthought to a primary business environment issue. Fortunately, one type of commercial flooring can alleviate many of the concerns tied to your old flooring—epoxy flooring. Keep reading for epoxy floor benefits.

Epoxy Floor Benefits

Epoxy flooring consists of a durable, concrete floor sealed with an epoxy coating. As one of the most popular types of commercial flooring in use today, epoxy flooring is often found in laboratories, food and medicine plants and distribution centers, warehouses, garages, and manufacturing facilities. These industries often choose epoxy flooring because of the numerous benefits it holds over traditional bare concrete floors, including:

  1. Safety. Epoxy flooring offers low-slip options, as well as coatings that are resistant to extreme temperature changes and fire. Also, many epoxy coatings provide resistance to chemical spills and can more easily facilitate cleanups, keeping those working with hazardous chemicals safer than bare concrete alone.

RELATED ARTICLE: 4 Reason to Choose Full-Broadcast Epoxy for Your Garage

  1. Low Maintenance. Unlike concrete, epoxy coatings are non-porous, making it impossible for dirt, oil, and other stains to sink in. Cleanup of substances from dust to chemical spills is much easier than with a bare concrete floor.
  2. Strength and Durability. Once applied to your concrete floors, epoxy coatings harden to a durable polymer and extend the floor’s life. Concrete floors coated with epoxy are resistant to impacts, temperature extremes, and caustic chemicals, allowing them to wear much more slowly than a bare concrete floor.
  3. Reduced Vehicle Impact. Whether you utilize a fleet of transport vehicles for distribution, in-house machinery for loading, or both, epoxy flooring causes less wear than bare concrete flooring. In return, vehicle maintenance efforts and costs decline as well.

RELATED ARTICLE: Go Beyond Dusting – The Importance of Deep Cleaning

  1. Environmentally Friendly. Epoxy flooring is considered a viable green alternative to other types of flooring that require more materials and need replacement more often. In addition, the reduced impact on your vehicle fleet can add years to vehicle life and require vehicle replacement less often.
  2. Attractive Qualities. Unlike a traditional concrete floor, epoxy flooring is available in practically any color combination and can enhance the appearance of your business—especially since it resists dirt and spills. Depending on the gloss you choose, epoxy flooring can also reflect overhead lighting and brighten your business space.
  3. Efficient Installation. Depending on the condition of your existing flooring, you may be able to apply epoxy flooring directly to your concrete. The overall ease of application and quick curing time allow business to continue as usual much more quickly than with other flooring installations.

Epoxy floor benefits include: non-porous, easy to clean, resistant to wear, and extends the life of traditional flooring. If you’d like to learn more about how adding an epoxy floor can eliminate your business’s flooring concerns, reach out to the experts at Professional Surface Restoration or call (419) 705-8693.

4 Reasons to Choose Full-Broadcast Epoxy for Your Garage Floor

By Epoxy Floors

Your garage floor takes a beating—it gets stained from dirt and tire tracks, oil stains, and the wear and tear of all the activities you do in your garage. It’s the place where you work on your car and store everything from boxes of family mementos to bicycles, tools, lawnmowers, and yard games. The professionals at Professional Surface Restoration know how hard it is to keep the concrete floor of your garage clean and attractive, and that’s why we recommend treating your floor with an epoxy floor coating. Consider these advantages an epoxy-coated floor offers.

Prevents Wear to Tires

You typically think of your garage as a place where your car is safe, but most people don’t realize that an untreated, stained concrete floor can wear on tires. When you use epoxy over your concrete floor, it creates a thin buffer that helps protect your tires by giving them a smoother surface on which to sit. Even a little increase in tire lifespan saves money on repairs down the road.

Easy Installation

Replacing a concrete floor is a huge undertaking that you will wish you could have avoided. The good news is you can! Applying a coating of epoxy to your concrete flooring is fast and easy and doesn’t require any heavy power tools. After it is applied, it immediately starts protecting the concrete, so you get years more out of it before replacement is necessary.

Professional Look

A sharp-looking, clean garage floor makes a huge difference in the way you see your garage, as well as the way others view your workspace. The spills and stains that build up on concrete not only look bad, but they can also produce an unpleasant odor that no one wants to be around. For a professional look, coat your floor in epoxy to keep it shiny and clean and help to create a more appealing shop environment.

Makes Cleaning Easy

Your garage floor becomes filthy over time due to oil leaks, gasoline, bleach, and other messy substances that are usually left to set in for a while before they are cleaned up. Using an epoxy coating benefits your garage floor by filling in the porous surface of the concrete with a substance that is easy to clean and adds an extra layer of strength to help preserve the concrete and keep it from breaking down over time.

If you are looking for a way to keep your concrete garage floor looking shiny and new, epoxy flooring is the solution you have been seeking.
